Institute conducts research in the field of encyclopedia studies, develops scholarly and methodological principles for preparing reference works of various types, and implements the research and publishing project Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine.

Ukrainian Encyclopedia Studies

– research into the history of Ukrainian encyclopedias;

– study of the typology of Ukrainian encyclopedic reference works;

– research into and development of digital encyclopedic resources, including online encyclopedias.

Encyclopedia Making

– development of the theoretical and methodological foundations of encyclopedic practice, including encyclopedia publishing;

– research into encyclopediography (the theory and practice of compiling encyclopedias);

– improvement of the principles governing the creation, systematization, editing, and dissemination of encyclopedic knowledge.

Main Research and Publishing Project

The Institute’s central project is the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, a multidisciplinary academic encyclopedia devoted to Ukraine and Ukrainians. More than 80,000 encyclopedia articles have been prepared and published within the project.
